Privacy Policy

This privacy policy sets forth how my website collects, shares and uses personal data. In January 2023 I revised this website to remove references and functionality (for ex., the Contact Us feature) that no longer apply since closing Zimmer Legal in late 2022. This means I no longer accept contact info or inquiries through this website. In light of this very limited collection, I thought about deleting the privacy policy entirely, but privacy is my jam so…

Squarespace and Technical Personal Data

My website is hosted by Squarespace.  Through Squarespace, my site may collect the following personal data to power my site analytics, including:

·       The browser you use to visit my site (e.g., Chrome, Safari);

·       The operating system your device runs on (e.g., Windows, iOS);

·       The type of device you use to visit my site (i.e., desktop or mobile);

·       The web page you visited prior to coming to my site;

·       The web pages you visit within my site;

·       Any searches you make within my site; and

·       Your IP address.

Analytics & Advertising

From time to time, I look at my site analytics within Squarespace to understand things like which pages attract the most traffic.  So far, I can’t really see any rhyme or reason as to why people are coming to my site or what they want to read when they get here.  I guess I’ll just keep doing as I do…

I have disabled the Activity Log within Squarespace, which means that I don’t collect or see your IP address.  Squarespace will still receive it but according to Section 4.b of their privacy policy, they use your personal data “in anonymous, aggregated or pseudonymized form which does not focus on you individually” in order to “evaluate, provide, protect or improve” their services.  If you really don’t want Squarespace to have your data, may I suggest browsing through a Virtual Private Network?

I haven’t enabled the more sophisticated analytics capabilities within Squarespace because after practicing law, teaching a law course, and raising three kids, SEO doesn’t rank among my top priorities.

I don’t engage in online advertising or other lead generation tactics and will only disclose your personal data to third parties for their direct marketing purposes over my dead body.  My.  Dead.  Body.

Cookies & Tracking Technologies

The personal data noted above is collected through cookies and similar technologies, which are small files or pieces of text that download to a device when you access a website or app.  You can view information about the cookies dropped on your device through Squarespace here.  If you don’t like what you read, you can edit your browser options to block cookies.  Squarespace sites do not respond to browser “do-not-track” requests.  However, I don’t use any cross-device tracking functions within my use of Squarespace.

Information Sharing

I don’t anticipate sharing any personal data collected through my site with vendors other than Squarespace or their sub-vendors.  However, Squarespace uses font files from Google Fonts and Adobe Fonts in order to properly display this site to you.  This means that servers where the font files are stored may receive personal information about you, including information about your browser, network, or device and your IP address.

I am really struggling to think of other situations where I would share your personal data with third parties. I suppose it’s possible that I would share your data with law enforcement as part of a criminal investigation or legal action, but only if you did something really naughty through my site.  Please don’t do something really naughty through my site (strike that - please don’t do something really naughty at all).

Security

I rely on Squarespace to provide the security for my site, as described in their privacy policy

Miscellaneous

My site is not directed at minors but God bless the child who reads a privacy legal blog in their spare time.

My site is hosted in the United States and intended for a U.S. audience.  International folks are more than welcome to read, but please be aware that this means your personal data noted above will be transferred to the U.S.

I don’t foresee any big changes but I do reserve the right to change this privacy policy at any time by posting an updated version to this page.  Any updates will be effective immediately and your continued use of my site will constitute acceptance to any such changes.

Thanks for reading all the way to the end, you big nerd!  ;)
